Impingement

This common and painful shoulder condition can be caused by repetitive shoulder movements especially overhead. It is associated with aging and can take weeks to months to improve.

Tendonitis

This can result from overuse activities like throwing or overhead lifting. While tendonitis can resolve within a short period, pain from damaged tissue associated with tendinopathy can last months.

Calcific Tendonitis

Sometimes a hard calcium deposit can build up in a tendon causing pressure and pain. Pain can come on suddenly and pain associated with this condition can be severe.

Shoulder Instability

An injury to the shoulder that stretches or tears the ligaments and capsule of the shoulder can result in instability. This can create a sensation that the shoulder is coming out of the socket.

Rotator Cuff Tear

This injury is painful, can cause night pain, and is more common after age 50. Pain and weakness with overhead lifting and resisted external rotation of the arms are associated with this condition.

Labral Tear

Sometimes an injury like bracing for a fall can result in a labral tear. The labrum can be vulnerable to overuse like repetitive weight training, throwing, and wear and tear associated with certain types of work.

Frozen Shoulder

This should be considered if the shoulder is painful and stiff. Some medical conditions like diabetes have been associated with this condition. It can sometimes take months for this problem to improve.
